So Long, Life With Captain Fussybuckets! {giveaway, too!}

So Long, Life With Captain Fussybuckets!

Big changes are coming to this blog and I'm SO excited!  Back when I first started Life With Captain Fussybuckets, the Captain was 2, Baby D was just a few months old, we were between jobs, and well, that was FIVE years ago!  This blog has become more than I could have ever imagined and I am so thankful.

I have always written about our entire family, and after our third son arrived, it became clear that the blog needed a rebrand.  I began thinking about it then, almost three years ago, and it has been a goal ever since.  I wanted a space on the web that could be for sharing recipes, DIYs, crafts, gardening posts, parenting stories, and just posts about our life and sharing things that we enjoy.  I believe Life With Captain Fussybuckets is just that, but there are a few issues with the name.

1.  It is wordy.  I remember this each and every time I have to type it out or say it aloud.

2.  It is about only one child, who is still sometimes fussy, but that isn't really our life anymore.

3.  It is not a representation of our whole family.

4.  Without going into specifics, sometimes it's accidentally misconstrued or letters get mixed up, producing a word (or words) that are not exactly family friendly.  Let's just leave it at that.  (ha!)

The Captain, who is 7, is not really okay with this change.  He loves having a blog named after him, even if it is a silly baby nickname.  He has always been proud to be THE Captain Fussybuckets and of course, he always will be!  He is growing up, though, and I think he should be represented in a new way.  I have yet to decide what I will call him on the new blog, but I think the Captain might have stuck.

All this to say….I thank you for reading this post, reading this blog, and being here.  I appreciate everyone who has ever read this blog!  Right now, things are going on behind the scenes to create a great new space for this blog.  It will have a new look, a new name, new social media names, but everything else will be the same.  Everything will be redirected to the new site.  What does this mean?  If you go to, it will redirect to the new blog.  You will be able to find your favorite posts from Life With Captain Fussybuckets on the new site, it will just look different.  You will still be able to find me on social media, I will just have a new name.  I am keeping my pictures the same, so you will be able to still recognize me.  Everything will change over accordingly.  Don't worry, we can get through this together.  đź™‚

As a huge THANK YOU for sticking with me, I am giving away one $50 Baskin Robbins gift card for you and your family to enjoy during this hot summer.  The giveaway is over on Facebook, however, so click over to enter!!

Pick Up “More Than Just ‘The Talk'” If You’re Dreading The Sex Talk – Great Gift for Parents, Ministers, Grandparents, and More

This "sex talk" post was brought to you by Family Christian.  All opinions are mine.

Our kids are fairly young – 6, 4, and 1, so I figured that we had a few more years to worry about the "sex talk."  I should have known better, though, because my boys have noticed a LOT in their short lives and have asked many questions that have definitely made us squirm.  There is no better time to fully equip ourselves for the ongoing "talk" that needs to happen.  Kids are literally bombarded with confusing messages and images and they need to have a safe place to go with their questions.  It is so important that their parents or guardians are the ones they are going to, or they might get the wrong messages and information.

MoreThanJustTheTalk Jonathan McKee

I gave the book More Than Just "The Talk" by Jonathan McKee, to my youth minister husband to read first.  He was excited because he had been following McKee for years and had actually considered purchasing this book for his ministry and for his role as father to our three boys.  He provided the following discussion about the book:

More Than Just "The Talk" by Jonathan McKee, is an excellent tool for parents and ministers of toddlers to teenagers. This book provides readers with encouragement and the tools to engage in meaningful conversations with their kids about sex. As a full-time youth minister for over a decade, and parent of 3, I thought I was ready to have conversations about sex with my kids. It turns out I was wrong. There are so many factors and intricacies of the sexual culture our kids are growing up in, that I feel I need help. Not only that, but everything about our sexual culture is changing. That’s where this book comes in. The premise of the book, is that there is more to successful parenting than just giving your children “the talk.” Successful parenting requires a lifelong conversation with your children about sex, and acute awareness of the environment your children are living in.

The great thing about what Jonathan does in this book, is that he breaks down each factor and corresponding tool into chapters. He’s not afraid to go into detail about some of the gruesome facts, and awkward conversation terms, that parents are afraid to hear about. And after giving us all the honest truths about our children he helps us stay calm, and gives us a Godly plan, based on scripture, about how to address our concerns without “freaking out.” He wants us to turn “overreaction” into “interaction.” I have followed Jonathan’s ministry research for the last 10 years of my ministry, and this book is one of his best works. I can’t wait to put these new tools into practice with my own kids and with the students in my ministry.

This is an absolutely great gift for parents or guardians with children of any age.  It can never be too early to start thinking about the lifelong discussion and trust that needs to happen between parents and their children.  We can shield them from the oversexualized world, but we can prepare them.  Head over to Family Christian online store, or find a store near you to pick up a copy.  It's a great investment for parenting success!

Family Christian is also giving one lucky reader a $10 appreciation certificate to go towards the purchase of this book, that has a retail value of $13.  Giveaway closes on April 12th, 2015.

noahIf there is one thing that never gets old, it's reading books.  We love to sit down with a good book and read it together.  The Captain is a good reader and he loves to read, too.  I never knew how refreshing it would be to open and explore a wordless picture book, though!  We were sent "Noah" by Mark Ludy to review and the pictures truly do speak for themselves.  Looking at the detail that the illustrator put into these pictures is just amazing.

Noah bookThe boys are already familiar with the story of Noah, but even if a child isn't, they will be intrigued and engaged with these beautiful pictures.  Children can use their imaginations and what they know about the story of Noah already to tell a full story with this book.  It has also inspired us to open the Bible and reread the story of Noah to see the inspiration Mark Ludy used when drawing.  (Read more about Mark Ludy.)

The following picture is my favorite in the book.  Noah is looking up at God with a look of awe, fear, and undoubtedly has many questions running through his mind.  But he trusted God.  Noah knew that God was in control and he wanted to do whatever was asked of him.  What a wonderful lesson for this kids.  Trust in Him and you will be richly blessed!

I highly recommend this beautiful hardcover picture book for you or a someone you know.  I guarantee you will find yourself getting lost in the book – all 64 pages, thinking of what it must have been like for Noah so long ago!  (Bonus:  Find Squeakers the mouse on every page!)  Purchase NOAH on Amazon for less than $15.  It would make an awesome Christmas gift!

Prepare New, Quick Lunches For The Family with Jimmy Dean

This quick lunches post has been brought to you by Jimmy Dean®. All opinions are mine.

I am so lucky to be able to be a stay-at-home mom and we are even luckier to be able to have lunch with Daddy most days because he works close to home. The thing I do not like, however, is finding something for all of us to eat at lunchtime. We usually do our homeschool in the morning, along with chores and sometimes errands, and a nap for Baby Brother squeezed in somewhere, as well. Preparing a variety of quick lunches with flavor is tricky! Thankfully, Hubby and the boys love sandwiches, but cold lunch meat sandwiches every day get old pretty fast.

Today I got creative with the Pulled Pork with Potatoes Bowl from Jimmy Dean®â€‹ and surprised everyone with hot pulled pork sandwiches. They were a big hit! I also made Hickory smoked turkey breast sandwiches, which Hubby requested we have again after I made them for dinner a few weeks ago. The NEW Jimmy Dean® and Jimmy Dean Delights® frozen lunch and dinner entrées are filling, delicious, and priced right.

I found a lot of great inspiration on the Jimmy Dean Pinterest page, and I have created my own #ShineAnytime Pinterest board to pin all of the great lunch and dinner options for these new Jimmy Dean products, found at Walmart in the frozen entrée section. I was hoping that our Walmart had more of the sandwiches to keep on hand for lunches, but I will have to check out some more Walmart stores to stock up.

If you are concerned about calories, have no fear. The Jimmy Dean Delights look equally as delicious. You get TWO yummy snack sized smoked ham and cheddar sandwiches on pretzel buns for only 290 calories. There are also barbecue options like the Delights pulled chicken sandwich and chipotle pulled pork sandwich for 300 calories for two snack sized sandwiches. I cannot wait to try the Jimmy Dean Delights Golden Roasted Turkey Bowl with potatoes, carrots, and celery for 210 calories. Check out the other Delights Beyond Breakfast choices from Jimmy Dean.

Finally! Sunglasses for Kids that are Durable and Stylish {giveway, too}

This sunglasses for kids post was brought to you by Paxley.  All opinions are mine.

Eyes are valuable, we all know that.  Kids' eyes are so delicate and they need to be protected.  When we introduced him to his first pair of sunglasses at the age of 1, they weren't comfortable and he hated them.  Well, sometimes he would wear them, but they were off soon, and likely thrown on the floor.  Most kids' sunglasses aren't constructed well and break easily.  We've been through countless pairs of sunglasses.

The folks at Paxley understand kids and the need for quality glasses and sunglasses.  They have conducted extensive research and come up with safe, health concious, and chic eyewear for our kids.  Paxley eyewear has age-appropriate dimensions and the most quality, child-safe materials.

  • pinchless hinges
  • adjustable temples
  • BPA free
  • lead free

Save Money on Delicious Water with a Home Water Filter

This home water filter post was brought to you by Aquasana.  All opinions are mine.

water filter

Captain Fussybuckets and I are both, what I like to call, water snobs.  I really loathe the taste of tap water and as much as I hate to admit it, I would rather be a little bit thirsty than have to drink tap water and he is the same way.  For awhile, I would buy gallons of purified water at the grocery store.  Then I realized how horrible that is for the environment, especially if I don't recycle the plastic containers.  And really, who wants to lug those heavy jugs into the house and have to go to the store for water, if you don't have to?  Our refrigerator has a water filter, but we have had bad luck with replacement filters making the water taste…funky.
