Wholly Guacamole & Salsa

We absolutely LOVE salsa in our house.  Daddy loves the hot stuff, I like the mild-medium salsas, and the Captain likes the extremely mild (aka not spicy at all) salsa!  So we were so excited to try out the delicious Wholly Salsas, Guacamole, and Avocado.

We love pineapple, so I decided to open the pineapple salsa first.  It wasn't hot to me, at all, which I was suprised about.  I think my preference would be a spoonful of pineapple salsa plus a spoonful of the medium salsa!    Yum!

I decided that my favorite salsa was the Avocado Verde Salsa.  It is a mix of tomatillo salsa and guacamole and it is soooooo good.  I bet I ate half of the container in one sitting.  YUP!  It was that good!

In a close second was the Guacamole & Spicy Pico.  It has a layer of guacamole on the bottom and a layer of spicy pico de gallo on the top.  I slathered some on my chicken fajitas and it was again, soooooo good:

Then I decided I should break out of the mold of traditional Mexican food.  We've been loving eating pan grilled squash, okra, and zucchini this summer, so I added some Roasted Tomato Salsa to the top of this summery dish and it was delicious!  It made it have a whole different, delicious flavor that I loved!

Okra, Squash, Zucchini

You can add these Wholly Salsas and Guacamoles to anything.  The possibilites are endless.  If you want to spice up a regular old grilled chicken breast?  Just pick one of the Wholly products and you won't be disappointed!  Wholly has even made an extensive recipe section on their website.  What about a banana/avocado slush or using the pineapple salsa as an ice cream topping?  What about using the Red Pepper Mango Salsa in a delicious cheesecake?  Anything you can imagine will definitely be delicious with Wholly products!

Be sure to follow Wholly on Twitter and Facebook.  You can find Wholly products in grocery and other stores nationwide.  Wholly is even in Canada!  Check out their website to find a store near you.

Wordless Wednesday: Go For The Gold!

Favorite Toys

When I was little, I spent a lot of time playing with my favorite toy, the Fisher Price doll house.  I loved that thing.  There's just something about those little figurines with round heads and the ability to put them in the little chairs, lay them on the little beds, and even push them around in the school bus that we had.  I'm so glad my mom was smart enough to save this awesome toy so my kids could play with it!

Here is a picture of Captain Fussybuckets playing with it last year when we lived with them for a few months.  He loved playing with it, too!  (sorry it's blurry, it was an iPhone picture!)

my childhood dollhouse

I've thought about buying the boys something similar to this, but, alas, toys just aren't the same.  There are a few fire station toys that are a lot like this (although way more expensive) and I might get them that, but we'll see.  I'm always on the look out for a great deal!

I also wanted to share with you two toys I bought last week at Target.  I don't usually get my kids toys when we go shopping because, then they expect it.  But we were in the toy section (we were shopping with my parents if that tells you anything.  HAHA!) and I found this box of wooden trucks.  They had everything, and they were only $3 each!  I let the boys pick one out and honestly, it's the best $6 I've ever spent.  These trucks have quickly become some of their favorite toys!  Baby D was sick on Sunday and my hubby said that the Captain played with these trucks for thirty minutes, just laying on the floor in church, pushing them back and forth.  If anyone knows my child, you know how astounding that is!  The truck on the left has a little magnet on it, for picking up things.  The Captain has experimented with everything and it has taught him a lot about magnets and metal!  The truck on the right is a dump truck, but they like to take that part off and I wasn't about to go look under our pillow fort that we made this morning for it to make the picture.  So, it's a dump truck, just imagine a green box on top.  đź™‚  Oh!  And there was a warning sticker that advised to use caution for kids under 3, so, keep that in mind.  But, $3 for a toy that has been played with more in a week than most of their other toys.  I'm sold!

the boys love these trucks!

\What was your favorite childhood toy?  What is your child's current favorite toy?

“Mommy! I’m soooooo hungry!”

"Mommy!  I'm soooooooooooooo hungry!" is something I hear often from Captain Fussybuckets.  Most of the time, he knows exactly what we want (and we have it) or he'll choose something if I give him choices.  I need to work on my choices and expand upon what I offer him.  There are a couple of things that he'll usually always eat – turkey hot dogs (nitrate and nitrite free!), oranges, peaches, strawberries, cherries, grapes, apples, plumcots, ham and cheese or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, Annie's mac & cheese, tuna salad and crackers, any baked goods we have, and cereal.

He really wants to like smoothies, but I've tried a few different recipe and he just doesn't like them.  Oddly enough, he doesn't care for milkshakes, either. I don't know if it's the whole drinking something ice cold through a straw or the fact that you might have to chew something you suck out of a straw?  ha!  I don't know.  He does like ice cream, sometimes, but usually only to eat the cookies or candy that's inside!

He's not a fan of cheese, except American cheese on a ham and cheese sandwich or the occassional quesadilla or nachos.  I know, right,  what kid doesn't like cheese?

I can see him trying new things and sometimes enjoying them, like carrots with Ranch or mild salsa.  His mind is opening and usually if he takes one bite, he can decide if he likes it and is proud of himself.  If we can continue this, we are sure to find more stuff he loves!

What is your child's favorite go-to food?  Are they willing to try new things?

We had an AWESOME time at the Wiggles’ Concert!

If you didn't know by now, three of the original four Wiggles will be retiring at the end of this year.  That's why I was SO thrilled to be able to take the boys to one of the last Wiggles concerts in Texas yesterday, as a part of their Celebration Tour.  Captain Fussybuckets and Baby D haven't really watched a lot of the older Wiggles stuff, but I can tell you that we have two copies of their DVD – "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" because when the Captain was about 18  months old, we thought we had lost the first copy we had and since he asked for it daily, we quickly bought a new one.  And the Wiggles' DVDs – "Hot Poppin' Popcorn" and "Getting Strong" are also HUGE favorites around here.  We catch them occassionally on Sprout, as well, and the boys are always mesmerized.

My husband and I were shocked and amazed that we were able to sit on the very front row at the concert with the boys.  What a special, exciting,  and just delightful experience!  Yes, I'm an adult and yes, I'm describing sitting on the front row at a kids' concert with these words.  You see, The Wiggles are REAL musicians with REAL talent.  They don't have to rely on … anything, really.  Their show is just that good.  We four, along with the rest of the crowd, were entertained from start to finish.  It was a magical, fun, and wonderful time at the Wiggles' show!

When we got there, there was a Wiggles video playing on the big screen.  Millions of parents with antsy kids thank you for this, Wiggles.  While we were waiting for the show to start, the kids got a mini Wiggles fix, and we were able to relax and enjoy!  This was just one of many ways that you could tell that the Wiggles are seasoned pros, good at what they do – entertaining kids.

Soon the show started and we got to see all of the four original Wiggles – Jeff, Greg, Anthony, and Murray.  We also saw Dorothy the Dinosaur, Henry the Octopus, Captain Feathersword, Wags the Dog, the Teddy Bear, the Big Red Car, some fabulous, talented dancers and the three up and coming Wiggles, Emma, Lachlan, and Simon, (in their current roles, NOT as the new Wiggles…yet!)

If you are attending a Wiggles show, and I highly suggest you do, make sure to bring a few things:  1.  a bone for Wags – could be a real bone, toy bone, paper bone, whatever, but it gets your kids closer to someone from the Wiggles crew.  2. a rose for Dorothy – same as the bone, someone from the Wiggles crew comes out to collect them during the show.  I don't know HOW we missed this, but a sweet mom behind us gave my boys a bone and some roses for a special photo op.  3.  a special sign for the Wiggles – they read them out during the show!

Now, for the pictures of our great day:

Wiggles wore him out!

The Captain had already had his nap, but all of the dancing during the show wore him out!  AND, Baby D was not feeling well, but even he couldn't resist dancing with the Wiggles!  He LOVED it, as we all did!  Here is a little snippet of the boys dancing during the show:

Thanks, Wiggles, for an amazing 21 years of great music and for a great concert in DFW, Texas!!

disclosure:  I was not paid to write this post.  The fabulous Wiggles PR people gave us tickets in exchange for writing a promotional post for the Wiggles' final concert, however, this post was not required.  I just want to gush about how AWESOME the Wiggles truly are!!

It’s Olympics Time!

I remember watching both the Summer and Winter Olympics as a kid.  I'd get so excited and quickly learn lots about sports I didn't even know existed.  And it wasn't until this morning when I turned on the news channel and they were talking about the Olympics that I thought "oh!  This is great for my kids!"  In fact, Captain Fussybuckets got so excited about the gymnastics that he went and had to practice his front roll on his bed!  He also oohed and ahhed over the swimming and coverage of the opening ceremony.  I'm excited that he's going to get to watch and enjoy the Olympics this year!  The Olympics are great family entertainment and I can't wait to watch with my boys!

I'm so glad that the Olympics seem to bring a positive feeling to the world.  While, of course, there are negative things, like the Greek Olympian who made a racist Tweet, but it's encouraging that she was disqualified for her remarks, showing that the Olympics have high standards and rules for their athletes!

And how encouraging is it that the news is covering the positive role models in the two Olympiads who are in their late twenties and have vowed to stay virgins until they're married!  I think it's fabulous that Jennifer Nichols and Lolo Jones are being vocal about their beliefs and I hope that teens and single people worldwide will be encouraged!

There are over 10,000 athletes from 204 countries competing in the Olympics this year!  Twenty-six sports will be competed in, so it's guaranteed to be great!  I think our family favorites will be aquatics, basketball, soccer (futbol), equestrian, and gymnastics!

Will your family be watching this year?  What is your favorite Summer Olympic sport??

The Safe Chemicals Act PASSED!

I'll be the first to admit that I am NOT involved in politics, but one thing I know is that I was happy to read this morning that the Safe Chemicals Act of 2012 passed!  What does this mean?  Well, the Safer Chemicals website states:

"For the first time in thirty-six years, Congress voted to update our out of date chemical safety laws.  In the wake of growing frustration among parents, cancer survivors and health professionals, the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee voted on Senator Frank Lautenberg's Safe Chemicals Act (S.847)."

This is fantastic news to the parents, caregivers, people in the medical profession, and anyone else who is highly concerned about the toxins and chemicals that are in the United States with little to no regulations.  According to the Safe Chemicals Act, it will require the chemical industry to "develop and provide information on the health and environment safety of their chemicals, in order to remain on the market."  It will also encourage safer chemicals to replace older, unsafe chemicals and get companies thinking about what, exactly, is in their products, and how it affects the health of American citizens.

I'm SO thrilled to see that this Act passed, and I'm glad that America is making a step in the right direction to improve the health of our nation!  For more information, please visit the Safer Chemicals website!  To learn more about different chemicals and toxins in our environment, check out the book that educated me, Little Changes, by Kristi Marsh!

Wordless Wednesday: Food Stealer

Captain Fussybuckets has been leaving his food unattended lately, and Baby D has learned to crawl up in the chairs and eat whatever is available to him.  This is one of my favorite things to take a picture of these days, and since I recently (slow to the game) learned how to make a collage……here you go!  Pics of Baby D, the Food Stealer!

Baby D likes to steal his brother's food!
